Machin Head - Open Value Labels 28th February 2014

Open Value - second class large letter
Open Value - first class letter

The Post Office started to roll out their new NCR Post & Go machines on 28th February 2014. The first Office to operate these was Harpenden, Hertfordshire. As well as vending fixed tariff rates the machines also produced open value labels. These can be for pretty well any tariff rate and in that context are akin to Horizon labels and include a Service Type code, Accounting code, Payment Amount and Weight. The machines print to second or first class labels depending upon the tariff being purchased. Originally, the second class NVI (cyan) was found with the year code MAI2 and the first class NVI (olive brown) with the year code MAI3. Subsequently, further printing were introduced with later year codes :-

  Machin Label Colour Year Codes
  Cyan (second class NVI) MAI2 , MAI3, MAI4, MAI5, CLI6S

Olive brown (first class NVI) MAIL, MAI3, MAI4, MAI5, MAI6

A Philatelic Carrier Card / Collectors Pack containing Open Value Post & Go labels was issued on 7th July 2014. Five Open Values were in the pack namely : Second Class (2L), Second Class Large (2LG), First Class (1L), First Class Large (1LG) and Airmail (A). The first class labels (olive brown) have no year code and the second class (cyan) are MAI2. These labels mimic output from NCR machines but have in fact been produced as 'Specials' with office code 'B7GB14' and machine code 'C001' and transaction number 015 for all five labels - the print may not be produced by thermal printer. The pack is numbered 15 and was priced at £3.78.

Enquiry Office Machines 9th February 2015

1st Class from Crewe Enquiry Office
Note : the code line starts C2GB15

Two RM Series II machines were in operation at Crewe and Bradford North Enquiry Offices from December 2014. On 9th February 2014 these machines were replaced by two 'new' machines which are to be on trial for six months. These machines are the basic RM Series II machine with the addition of a Barcode reader. Additionally, software options allow customers to pay Postage Due and Customs Duty charges. Of note, the Post & Go labels carried Crewe or Bradford N(orth) strap lines below the tariff rate (this was removed with the tariff rate change on 30th March 2015). Additionally, the bottom code line has the first block starting with the letter 'C' and the second block starting with the letter 'M'. Three more offices at Croydon, Doncaster and Kingston upon Thames had machines installed during April 2015.

Open Value - second class large letter
Open Value - first class large letter

An upgrade to the Post Office Post & Go NCR Machine network is being rolled in the course of the coming months. Machines will be installed with a third printer that will vend a new style of Open Value label (similar to the present large Horizon Labels). These new larger labels have a hidden date code MAI6 which occurs just behind the band of the Queens diadem. They don't carry phosphor bands and don't have die cut perforations. These new style of Open Value labels are vended for items over 100g. The first five offices to start providing these new labels came on-line on 20th September 2016.

Year code MAI7 started to appear in July 2017.
