January 2003

Two vertical delivery stamp rolls were issued on 21st January 2003. The rolls were produced by Enschedé and printed in gravure with conventional gum.

These rolls had already been made available to the Post Office network during late 2002.

February 2003

A Prestige Booklet with the theme 'Microcosmos' was issued on 25th February 2003 and priced at £6.99. It was produced by Enschedé, with the Machin se-tenant pane (pane 2) being printed in gravure and containing 4x1st NVI Gold and 4xE NVI.


Pane 1 contained Northern Ireland Country Pictorial definitives - 5x2nd Giant's Causeway and 4x1st Patchwork Fields, these were printed in Litho.

March 2003

A self adhesive Customised Retail Booklet was issued on 4th March 2003 and priced at £1.62. The 6x1st NVI booklet contained 4x1st NVI Gold and 2x1st NVI Hello Special Issue stamps. The booklet was produced by Questa (De La Rue Byfleet) and printed by gravure.


The printer changed from Walsall to De La Rue for the 1st Class NVI Welsh Country Pictorial definitive stamps. These were some of the last printings made on the Jumelle press at High Wycombe and were issued on 4th March 2003.

Two revised Business Sheets were issued on 18th March 2003. These Business Sheets were produced by Walsall (previously Enschedé) and printed by gravure. These were the Business Sheets to have the stamp matrix stripped away during manufacture. The top Panels had the date of printing and serial number on the reverse.

Two new Airmail booklets were issued on 27th March 2003. These used a new self adhesive booklet format containing just four stamps and a new Machin design - the Queens head on an unprinted background and airmail strips running down the right hand side. Additionally, both stamps introduced new NVI designators paying the postal tariff to 40 grams.

An associated presentation pack (pack no 60) also accompanied this issue priced at £2. The stamps were prepared specially for the packs with the 'die cut' cutting through the carrier paper. These are printed on the reverse yielding four different types depending upon the position the stamp would have occurred in the booklet.


The standard Retail Booklets were reissued on 27th March 2003 with 'The Real Network' strapline on the front covers.

The first printings of National definitives from De La Rue Byfleet appeared during late March 2003. These included the 20p and 33p values. Cylinder numbers carried a 'D' prefix and the margin rules (Jubilee lines) that were a feature of De La Rue (High Wycombe) printings were no longer present.

April 2003

A self adhesive Customised Retail Booklet was issued on 29th April 2003 priced at £1.62. The 6x1st NVI booklet contained 4x1st NVI Gold and 2x1st NVI Extreme Endeavours Special Issue stamps. The booklet was produced by De La Rue Byfleet and printed by gravure.


The 41p National definitive printed by De La Rue Byfleet became available during April 2003. Cylinder numbers carried a 'D' prefix.


May 2003

A new definitive value was issued on 6th May 2003 in respect of the revised Postal Rates that became effective on 8th May 2003.

The second decimal Wildings definitive minisheet was issued on 20th May 2003 and priced at £2.52. The minisheet was produced by De La Rue and printed by Gravure on uncoated paper with a multiple '50' watermark.

An associated presentation pack (pack no 61) also accompanied this issue priced at £2.90.


Overseas Retail Booklets with the 'The Real Network' strapline on the front cover were reissued on 28th May 2003.

The 2nd Class NVI Welsh Country Pictorial definitive stamp were reissued on 28th May 2003. These were the result of the printer changing from Walsall to De La Rue Byfleet.

The 10p National definitive printed by De La Rue Byfleet became available during May 2003. Cylinder numbers carried a 'D' prefix.

June 2003

A Prestige Booklet with the theme 'A Perfect Coronation' was issued on 2nd June 2003 and priced at £7.46. It was produced by Walsall, with the Machin se-tenant pane (pane 1) being printed in gravure and containing 4x1st NVI Gold and 4x2nd NVI Bright Blue.

Pane 4 contained decimal Wilding definitives (2x47p and 2x68p) and a Special Issue £1 Coronation design by Dulac (1/3 value from the 1953 issue), these were printed in Gravure also, but on uncoated paper with a multiple '50' watermark.


The vertical delivery 500x2nd NVI stamp rolls became available during June 2003. The rolls were produced by De La Rue Byfleet and printed in gravure with conventional gum.

The 1p, 2p, 4p, 5p, 50p and £1 National definitives printed by De La Rue Byfleet became available during June 2003. Cylinder numbers carried a 'D' prefix.


July 2003

The High Values series was reissued on 1st July 2003 with the Recess printings being replaced by Gravure. These stamps were overprinted with Iriodin ink as the prevailing £1. The £5 Gravure had been printed in a dark brown colour, however, this was deemed unsatisfactory and changed to the issued colour of Azure.

An associated presentation pack (pack no 62) also accompanied this issue priced at £11.85.

A major error occurred on the £2 value in that the '£' sign was omitted on just one stamp. This occurred on stamp position R18/1 on the no dot sheet (within the cylinder block). Had his occurred outside the cylinder or date block positions this error may never have been picked up.


The 1st Class NVI Gold National definitive sheet stamps changed printer from Walsall to De La Rue Byfleet. The issue date was 1st July 2003.



A self adhesive Customised Retail Booklet was issued on 15th July 2003 priced at £1.68. The 6x1st NVI booklet contained 4x1st NVI Gold and 2x1st NVI British Journey Scotland Special Issue stamps. The booklet was produced by De La Rue Byfleet and printed by gravure.


The 8p, 42p and 47p National definitives printed by De La Rue Byfleet became available during July 2003. Cylinder numbers carried a 'D' prefix.


September 2003

A self adhesive Customised Retail Booklet was issued on 18th September 2003 priced at £1.68. The 6x1st NVI Transports of Delight booklet contained 4x1st NVI Gold and 2x1st NVI Meccano Aeroplane Special Issue stamps. The booklet was produced by De La Rue Byfleet and printed by gravure.


Large User Rolls of 10,000x2nd NVI stamps were in use during September 2003. The rolls were produced by De La Rue Byfleet and printed in gravure with conventional gum.

October 2003

The Country Pictorial definitives were reissued on 14th October 2003 with the design colour no longer using full bleed, but now having unprinted borders (white frame). The change was for operational reasons as difficulty had been experienced with the phosphor signal strength.
