2005 General Notes

The closure of De La Rue's Byfleet printing facility occurred in December 2004. Early 2005 saw the relocation of equipment including the ATN press to Dunstable with printing resuming in late March 2005.

January 2005

A 6x1st NVI Booklet with a Smilers promotional label ('Hello' stamp) was available in January 2005 and priced at £1.68. It was produced by Walsall and printed in gravure. Its shown below :-

February 2005

A Prestige Booklet with the theme 'The Brontë Sisters' was issued on 24th February 2005 and was priced at £7.47. It was produced by Walsall. The Machin se-tenant pane (pane 1) was printed in gravure and is shown below :-

March 2005

A 'Wilding Castles' minisheet was issued on 22nd March 2005 and priced at £3. It was produced by Enschedé and printed in both Intaglio and Litho. The minisheet contains 4 values, 50p Carickfergus Castle, 50p Windsor Castle, £1 Caenarfon Castle and £1 Edinburgh Castle.

April 2005

New Rate and 'Make up' value Machin definitives were issued on 5th April in respect of the April price increase.

July 2005

An 'End of the War' minisheet was issued on 5th July 2005 and was priced at £1.80. It was produced by Enschedé and printed in gravure. The minisheet contains 6 values, 5 Machin definitive 1st NVI gold and a 1st NVI 'special issue'.

September 2005

A new Definitive Presentation Packs (Pack No. 71) was issued on 6th September 2005 containing five self adhesive single stamps not available elsewhere. These were prepared specially for the presentation pack as singles and have unprinted backing paper, additionally the 'Die-Cuts' perfs go through the backing paper completely (the normal versions come from retail booklets which have printed backing paper or from Business Sheets).

Vertical 1000x2nd NVI stamp rolls were released - the Leaders have the Barcode 104027. These were produced by De La Rue and printed in gravure with conventional gum.



Special self adhesive jumbo coils for commercial bulk mailers were produced by Joh. Enschedé. These come from new printings and had probably been available since April 2005, although there existence only came to light later in the year.

The backing paper is different from that used for the 1998 printings in that its now a creamy yellow colour. Additionally, the backing paper has a five digit serial number every tenth stamp position.

These Jumbo coils contain 10,000 x 2nd Class NVI stamps and were printed in gravure.


October 2005

A Prestige Booklet with the theme 'The Battle of Trafalgar' was issued on 18th October 2005 and was priced at £7.26. The printer - Cartor has been used by Royal Mail for the first time in producing a prestige book. All panes were printed in Litho with the exception of the Machin se-tenant pane, which was printed in gravure by Walsall. The Machin se-tenant pane (pane two) is shown below :-

November 2005

Two 'Z type' folded sheets (Booklets) were issued on 1st November 2005 containing Christmas stamps.
