October 2008

The roll out of 'Post & Go' self service machines in Post Offices commenced in October (The Galleries office in Bristol being the first on 8th October). The machines provide two types of label - one for the package being weighed at the time of purchase or one for later use. The latter type of label carries the Machin head on the right hand side and will be printed with the appropriate rate on the left (the background is printed with continuous wavyline 'Royal Mail' security imprints). The codes running along the bottom include (left to right) Branch Number, Machine Number, Session Number and Transaction Number. The self adhesive labels were produced by Walsall and printed in gravure; the base colour is brown on a white (unprinted) background and they have two phosphor bands with die cut perfs (no ellipses). The Post and Go machine will print the appropriate value rate in black.

November 2008

Four different self adhesive booklets were issued on 4th November featuring Christmas stamps.

12x2nd NVI Ugly Sisters Oh yes it is !

A new self adhesive paper type would appear to have been introduced for the Christmas issues. The water soluble layer that had hitherto been present for previous self adhesive products seems to have been removed. This now makes it difficult to soak or float stamps off once applied to envelopes, etc.

The ink jet markings that occur on Counter Sheets were revised to include a Barcode. These occur in four sheet positions (note : the Spot Sheet has the ink jet printing in the left margin; these were previously in the right margin) :-
