A 6x1st NVI Custom Retail Booklet in conjunction with the Children's TV Classics - the Genius of Gerry Anderson was issued on 11th January 2011. The 2x1st Special Issue stamps feature the Thunderbird 2 vehicle. The cylinder numbers have been repositioned and now appear vertically by the side tab. The six designs were - Magpie, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Collared Dove, Blackbird and Long-tailed Tit. An associated Pack containing specially printed gravure versions of these labels was issued also.

Definitives with the hidden year code for 2011 were found on 1st and 1st Large NVI Counter Sheets. The 'MAII' code on the 1st Large occurs in a different position - in front the Queens neck.

March 2011

Low value definitive counter sheets have been reprinted on self adhesive paper and were issued on 8th March 2011. Interestingly, these low values do NOT have the iridescent overprint but do have the four 'U' shaped die cuts. The counter sheet size is 25 coming from primary sheets of 300 (12x25). The 2p, 5p and 20p were laid down on the same primary sheet which means only 4 cylinder grid positions will occur for these values (the 2p occupies left grid positions, the 5p occupies central grid positions and the 20p occupies right grid positions). Cylinder numbers are all D1. The five values to be issued are :-

Four new tariff rate values were issued on the 29th March 2011 in respect of the April 2011 price rises. These new rate values were self adhesive printings and have the iridescent overprint and four 'U' shaped die cuts. The 76p, £1.10 and £1.65 were laid down on the same primary sheet which means only 4 cylinder grid positions will occur for these values (the 76p occupies left grid positions, the £1.10 occupies central grid positions and the £1.65 occupies right grid positions). Cylinder numbers are all D1. The four new Machin definitives are as follows :-

Correspondingly, Country Pictorial definitives were also issued on the 29th March 2011 for the 68p and £1.10 values. The Country Definitive printing contract has been taken on by Cartor and so these and future printings will be by Litho. These continue to be printed on ordinary PVA gummed paper but come in a smaller sheet size of 25. An associated presentation pack (Pack No 91) was also issued containing the 8 new country stamps priced at £7.65.

An average 10 percent tariff increase was introduced on 4th April 2011. Second Class increased from 32p to 36p (+4p) while the first class rate increased from 41p to 46p (+5p). Other of the key changes were :-

De La Rue Security Print on the move again.

Its reported that De La Rue are planning to close their Dunstable print works and move up north. This could be Gateshead where they have one of their Banknote printing sites. The move is likely to occur within the next two years and will probably be late 2012 / early 2013.

September 2011

The third Prestige Booklet of 2011 commemorating the Centenary of Aerial Post was issued on 9th September 2011. Again, his Prestige booklet was sold with a 95p premium over the face of £9.02. The Machin pane contains 2x1st, 4x5p and 2x76p and a Recess printed Wilding Castles pane (pane 4) containing 4x50p featuring Windsor Castle (this originally had a £1 denomination back in 1955 but a 50p decimal version was produced in 2005 in a Wilding Castles minisheet). The booklet was produced by Cartor, however, the Castles Recess pane was subcontracted out to the French Government Printer who operate under the Phil@Poste title (previously ITVF). Cartor have entered into a relationship with the French Government Printer to fulfil their intaglio/recess requirements. This is the first time the French Government Printer has printed postage stamps for Royal Mail. Again, the Prestige Booklet carries the FSC logo (Forest Stewardship Council) and a Barcode -130743 which is the same as that used for Morris Booklet.

A minisheet commemorating the birth centenary of Arnold Machin and containing 10x1st NVI Gold definitives was issued on 14th September 2011. Originally reported to be a Cartor printing, the minisheet was in fact produced by Walsall and printed in Gravure. The minisheet gives a new Hidden Source Code 'M' to add to the pool of product identifiers. Additionally, the year code is prefixed by Arnold Machin's initials AM for this special printing and occurs in front of the front cross of the Queens diadem.

The fourth and last of the Post and Go 'Bird set' machine labels was issued on 16th September 2011 and featured Seabirds.

In late September 2011 (26th September 2011 has been seen) the Horizon software was upgraded with the result that the Machin Horizon labels now included two additional codes - these are Royal Mail internal accounting codes. The first occurs after the 'Royal Mail' strapline and is the letter 'c' in the example below - each service indicator e.g '1LG' will have a corresponding accounting code. The second occurs after the 'POSTAGE PAID UK' text and is a '4' in the example below, this code indicates VAT rating (for further details - Click Latest Machin News here).

During November 2011 a new version of the Horizon label started to appear with a revised layout of the Die Cuts that feature within the body of the design. This new layout may well be an attempt to address operational problems still being experienced by counter staff with the Horizon label.
